The employee is currently in his 9th year of service. If he started working on January 1st, he will be in his 10th year of service on January 1, 2020. (If he started Jan. 1, 2010, then from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2010 was his first year; Jan. 1, 2011 to Dec. 1, 2011, his second year; and so on.)
