Technically it is known as "discharging" your attorney. It is your right to do so at any time. It would be best to do it in writing (certified mail return receipt requested) so that there is a formal record of the discharge. If you hire another lawyer before the day of the hearing then the second lawyer can discharge the first lawyer and ask the court for an adjournment to obtain the file and prepare your case. There could be outstanding fees, etc., and that could create an issue. If you are going to court yourself then bring a copy of the letter of discharge and ask the court for an adjournment to obtain new counsel. How the court reacts depends on facts not stated here as well as the judge, etc. Good luck.
