FMLA is for the Family Medical Leave Act. Not all employees or employers qualify. If you both qualify and you apply, you are eligible for up to 12 weeks (non-consecutive) in a calendar year of unpaid leave. You can also (if you have it) probably be paid by taking your paid time off at the same time or sick time or both. You can also collect on your short term or long term disability for the same period but keep in mind that if you do not have consecutive leave (for example you have maternity leave and that is consecutive), and you did not take up all of the 12 weeks, you may have to reapply for the number of weeks you plan on taking in the next batch of time.
