I just tried to open the door and it broke.

If you did something wrong--such as pulling too hard when it seemed stuck; pulling it an awkward angle; etc.--then you might be responsible to pay. But if you did nothing wrong, as you indicate, then you would not be: a person is not responsible to pay simply because they damaged another property, but rather only if they damaged it on purpose (intentionally) or carelessly (negligently).
