I am sorry to say it, but your mother may be correct. Life insurance is a contract. If your mother was named as the beneficiary of life insurance, the money is hers and she can do what she wishes with it. In some states, including Florida, a spouse can inherit everything when her husband dies without a will and the only child is their joint child.
