Service by publication is running the document you are to serve in the legal notices section of a newspaper for the amount of time required by the court. The required amount of time for the notice to run in the legal notices section of a newspaper varies from state to state, but the court clerk can tell you how long the notice has to run for it to be valid service by publication. Service by publication is effective even if your ex never sees the notice in the newspaper. There isn't any separation agreement, but it would be advisable to check with the court clerk regarding the separation agreement because rules vary from state to state.
