I did not know what to tell the guy when he called me last night. I told him this is first I have heard of the loan but would do some checking.

If you have a Power of Attorney to conduct your Mother's business -like paying bills - then yes,you should look into the validity of the loan, speak with your Mom, and make the payments if things add up. Don't just make assumptions. You were wise to give yourself time to check things out. Good luck.
