You need to ask the court to appoint you an attorney or ask for a continuance so that you can find an attorney. Judges won't usually throw you in jail for simply asking for more time... however, they won't give you forever to seek an attorney. If you fail to get an attorney after a couple of settings, then the judge can set you for a final hearing and make you go forward without an attorney.
