Yes it can. In fact it can fire you for any reason or no reason at all. This is known as "at will" employment. In turn, you can choose to work for your employer or quit. That's the law. Excpetions to this would be in there is a union/employment contract that provides differently or this action violates stated company policy. Absent either of these circumstances, unless employment discrimination somehow was a factor (and doens't appear to be based on the information given), your termination would be within the law.
