If we are in the process of building a home, can we legally move in prior to completion?

We are doing everything ourselves and paying as we go. We have obtained permanent power and have gotten all the necessary inspections for the completed items. We do not have permanent heating and cooling or all the plumbing completed. We are staying here in order to work as much as possible. Is there any law that states we can not?

The only issue is whether you have a certificate of occupancy--which includes a temporary or interim one--since those are required for legal occupancy. You get those from your municipality (e.g. city or town); contact the building dept. and/or town clerk and inquire into this. If they grant it to you, it is legal to occupy.
