I am 55 years old and have never been convicted (or even arrested before this).

I can surely understand your worries with this matter. An arrest alone does not cause a problem with your status if it does not result in a conviction. It sounds here like the matter was dropped by the prosecutor. I would, however, speak with a lawyer about expunging your arrest record and getting your fingerprints back. Good luck.
