If I work in broadcast media, as a broadcaster am I entitled to use my own work for self-promotion?

We were recently told that we must ask permission before using recordings of ourselves in demo reels. “All news content belongs to the owners of station and not the reporters or production staff. Any use of content in the search for jobs will only be allowed through the written permission of insert owner’s name” We were told that we must sign a document stating that we understand this rule amongst a collection of other policies our owner is very verbally abusive, and rules with an iron fist.

No, you cannot use "your own" work against your employer's wishes or without its permission, because it is not "your own" work anything you do in the course of your employment or for your employer belongs to the employer. Even if you recordings feature you, you have no ownership in or rights to that recording, but it belongs wholly to your employer, which may withhold permission for you to use those recordings, etc.
