Even though the present of the dog is in the name of the girlfriend where in reality the dog was actually given to the boyfriend, under the laws of all states there is a presumption that the dog is the girlfriend's since she has registered title in her name.
However, this presumption is rebuttable where the boyfriend could claim that he in reality was given the dog and he is its owner where he could present witnesses supporting his position. If the dispute goes to a lawsuit regarding ownership to the dog, the court would then make an order based upon the evidence presented as to who is the actual owner of it.
