If an associate asked me to make a deposit at a bank and I did it, can I be charged with money laundering if I didn’t know his money was illegal?
I didn’t get paid for it or receive anything for doing it. Just trying to help him out because he didn’t have a car.

There is always the possibility that if you made a bank deposit for a friend and the money deposit resulted from an improper receipt by your business associate, you could be charged with money laundering.
If you just deposited the money in a bank account for your business associate without knowing that the money was received as a result of an ill gotten purpose does not suggest that you had an improper intent from a criminal standpoint to assist in a money laundering operation.
To be on the safe side, you might consider consulting with a criminal defense attorney about the situation you are writing about further.
