You are liable for rent until the date your possession ends--e.g. the day you are actually evicted or surrender possession. Therefore, during the time between being given notice that your tenancy is being terminated (which is a month's notice for a month-to-month tenant), or even during the time between (if you don't voluntarily move) being served with papers for an eviction action and a writ or warrant of possesion being executed against you (the lockout), you are potentially liable for the rent.
