You can only collect unemployment if *your employer* terminates you or does not let you return to work. If you don't come back because you want or need to stay home for your child, otherwise choose to not return, or due to some health issue, you are not entitled to unemployment benefits. If the reason you can't go back to work is some disability or health issue you personally suffered, you may be eligible for disability or even (longer term) SSI.
