If you co-signed for someone to rent an apartment and the person who is primarily obligated under the lease fails to pay the landlord the required rent where in the end you are forced to make the rental payment to the landlord, you have the basis for suing the primary person under the lease for the money paid for reimbursement of the amount paid.
The rationale is that there is an implied agreement between you and the person primarily obligated under the lease that if he or she cannot make the payments for rent and you end up doing so that you will be reimbursed for what you have paid.
