They are ony entitled to the worth of their labor and materials up to that point. Consider the home owner will countersue and cross claim you if you get sued by the subcontractor. The subcontractor is incorrect. It breached the agreement and this type of blackmail is illegal..  Contact an attorney to revise your future contracts with subcontractors and to write a cease and desist letter against this particular subcontractor.
