After 11 1/2 years of working for my employer, I was offered another job, which I accepted. However, the new job was not what I expected, I spoke to my former employer, and he verbally promised to hire me back to my former job. I then quit my new job. Now my former employer is having 2nd thoughts. Do I have any recourse?

Under the laws of all states in this country, employment with an employer with an employee is generlaly one "at will." Meaning, an employer can terminate an employee for any justifiable reason so long as the reason for termination is not in violation of public policy, for example, discrimination based upon gender, ethnicity and the like.
If you quit one position to return to your prior job and the former employer is having second thoughts as to rehiring you, you would not have any legal recourse if he or she did not re-hire you. From a practical matter, you should have received written confirmation of the re-hire to your former position befor you gave notice that you were quitting your last job.
