If I sell my home to the renter who had been in it, at what point do they stop paying rent?

I was told because we are working out the particulars but will sale the tenant can stop paying rent. I

own the home still and no money has changed hands.

They have to pay rent until they own the home--i.e. until title is transfered (such as at closing). As long as you are the owner, they have no right to live in your property rent free, even if they are in contract to buy it. That's the general rule; people can agree or contract otherwise, so if you have a contract with the renter which says something else, you have to follow the contract.
