Your husband is responsible for his medical costs, and therefore his assets--including his share of marital or joint assets (e.g. property, bank accounts, vehicles, etc.) are potentially subject to being used to pay creditors (e.g. the hospital).
You may have to contemplate bankruptcy as an option if the bills are unsupportable for your family. A debt to a hospital will be an unsecured debt, and therefore should be precisely the kind of debt that can be discharged or eliminated in whole or at least in significant part, in bankruptcy.
