What are the limits of my employer about sharing my social security number?

My employer has my SSN in the main personnel database which I’m fine with. Today I found out that they are sharing my social security number with other department’s database where outside consultants have access to the information and God know who else. Can I ask them to remove my social security number from any database other than the main personnel database?

So long as your social security number is being used internally within the company that you work for there is nothing improper with what you have written about. However, to be on the safe side, you may want to speak with your human resources representative about your concerns and document in writing the meeting you have with respect to the matter you have written about.
