Is a non compete contract binding if you were terminated?

I work in the plumbing industry and when hired by my previous employer
signed a non compete clause. I was terminated 2 years later and the
reason given for my termination was I didnt seem happy, so he was
letting me go. I dont see how a non compete would be enforceable if I
was terminated. Am I supposed to change careers?
