While both heirs and beneficiaries inherit when a person dies, they are not one in the same. A beneficiary is a person who is listed in a Will and is entitled their share of distributed estate assets. An heir inherits under the laws of "succession" when there is no Will; they are the legal next of kin of the deceased.
