A worker can be fired in whatever manner their employer chooses. That is unless there exists an employment contract or union agreement to the contrary. The fact so that most work is "at will" so a company can set the conditions of employment much as it sees fit. This inlcudes when, why and how to terminate an employee. Bottom line, yes you can be fired over the phone.
