You hail from California, correct? The answer to your question depends on the City code as well as the type of dwelling that you rent out. Multiple dwellings have a different requirement than say a two family dwelling. And while we all know that smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are an absolute requirement, fire extiguishers may not be. However, being that they are relatively cheap it is a good idea to have one handy. Good luck.
