What to do about a banking scam?

My mother applied for some sort of “secret shopper” thing online in which she was told she’d buy things from stores then rate the store. A few days later she received a check. I didn’t think the check was legitimate but she came out of the bank with $1500. Today the bank told her that they’d be taking $100 out of each one of her checks because she had committed fraud. Is this really fraud and what can she do other than pay off the debt?

You Mother needs to seek legal help as soon as she can.  She can start with contacting your state attorney general's office and reporting the compnay and the scam and the state banking commission as well.  They should open files on her behalf and help as much as they can before she has to pay for an attorney to help.  But she should consider at least hiring the attorney to write a letter on her behalf and to discuss what her options are legally under the laws in your state.  Good luck.
