An employer can ask if you have an recurrent condition or take any medications regularly which could affect the quality of your work, the ability of you to do the work, and/or impose risks on the employer (including the risk of being sued) or on coworkers or customers. There has to be a relevant and meaningful connection to work. The most common example: employees with CDLs who drive as a significant part of their job can be asked about diabetes or about the use of medications which can affect one's ability to drive safely. X-ray technicians can be asked about pregnancy (not an illness, but a medical condition). Etc.
