What to do if I was not given the real reason for my discharge?
My former boss let me go last week. I was told that I was let go due to restructuring/territory realignment. I found out today, from a friend who’s still working for the same company and boss, that on a conference call today (with my former sales team) my boss told the team I was let go and that it was performance based; he never mentioned a thing about a territory realignment. He also said that he would stick his neck out for his team but only for those who wanted to try and that it’s sad when relationships go bad, etc. Do I have a slander case? I don’t see how my relationship with him and my termination is anyone’s business, let alone public information. Also, it contradicts what he and HR told me as to why I was let go.

Based upon what you have written about I would make a claim for unemployment benefits and see if the former employer contests such and if so, he or she will be forced to give a reason.
Unfortunately for you employment in this country is terminable at the option of the employer absent any discrimination of a person who is a member of a protected class. Based upon what you have written I do not see you having a slander or any other legal claim against your former employer based upon what you have written in your question.
