If my H1B expires in about 1 1/2 years, when should my employer start the O-1 petition?

How long does O-1 processing take?

The O-1 will not really help you all that much; what you want to get started is the employment-based permanent residence process and you want to get it started asap as it would need to be FILED at least 1 year prior to your H-1b maximum 6 years expiration date in order for you to be able to extend your H-1B status beyond the 6 year maximum.
