If you were served with a notice to pay or quit your rental within a certain amount of time by your landlord, the landlord essentially wants the money owed him or her in that time period and if the money is unable to be paid, then you are requested to vacate the unit.
However, if you do not pay the money demanded in that time period stated in the landlord's notice, the landlord cannot legally lock you out of the rental. He or she is required to give you access to the rental and the landlord is not allowed to keep the tenant's property. The property has to be allowed to be picked up by the tenant by the landlord.
