How can I check on a possible inheritance?

My mother died and I was out of the country (in Mexico for 14 years). I recently contacted lost family members from my father’s second marriage and they told me that a lawyer was looking for me 4 years ago when my mother died for the testament. What can I do now? How can I find the lawyer or the case? I am still living in Mexico.

I am sorry for your loss.  Your Mother's estate would have been filed in the probate court located in the county in which your Mother resided at the time of her death.  That means where she lived at the time that she died.  So if there was some type of estate proceeding filed (a Will or Intestate proceeding), then it would have been filed in that courthouse under her name.  You should go down to the court and ask to see the file, which is a public record.  The file will list the name of the attorney, the efforts that the attorney made to locate you and what happened to your inheritance.  You can hire an attorney for this purpose as well.  Good luck.
