If my son was involved in an automobile accident and the other car was at fault but the cop advised to hire a lawyer, why would this be?

There's no way to know what was in the officer's head, but two likely possibilities are:

1) If the other car was at fault, your son may have a viable lawsuit against him for any car damage, out of pocket costs, injuries, lost wages, etc.--having a lawyer would help your son pursue his own claims.

2) The officer may expect that the other fellow, even if at fault, may try to blame your son and sue him; therefore, good to have a lawyer lined up.
