What actions can I take if my neighbors tried to break into my house?
My neighbors tried to break into my house after I gently asked them to calm down their kids. “Breaking” included – breaking and kicking the front door, yelling at me, insisting on opening the door, calling me “bitch” when I refused to open the door, etc. I called the police who promised to “talk to them”. Is it possible to charge my neighbors for these illegal actions (e.g. home assault or burglary attempt, etc)?

Whether to charge them anything is a question for the police to answer. You did the right thing to call the police. Otherwise, you can also try to get a retraining order against your neighbor.
