Absent some form of legally actionable discrimination (i.e. unfair treatment based on a person's race, religion, gender, nationality, age (over 40), or disability), a company can set the conditions of the workplace much as it sees fit. Accordingly, unless this disclosure violated the terms of an employment contract or union agreement it is legal. Also, as long as what was said was true, there is no basis for a defamation claim by your co-worker. Bottom line, while unprofessional, your supervisor's comment was not illegal.
