You will either have to 1) do the necessary renovations or changes to bring it into compliance and then get it inspected and permitted; or 2) tear it down; or theoretically 3) ask for a waiver from the town/municipality to allow a non-compliant room, but that is almost never given. The problem is, regardless of who was at fault in the non-permitted room (i.e. who built it), the current homeowner (you) must legally deal with the consequences and either bring the room in to compliance or else eliminate it.
