What can happen if I do not get a building permit to remodel my house?
My house is old (late 1800, early 1900) and is in bad need of repair. The attic walls and roof need replaced but the town sent me a letter saying I had to get a building permit or they would seek legal action against me.

They can enjoin you from doing the work/ oftentimes they can make you tear it down/pay exorbitant amount of fines, etc.
You should seek to review your city or county's zoning, planning and building and safety codes for specific penalties. For specific legal guidance, please hire a lawyer. Try www.attorneypages.com and check his or her record at the Indiana State Bar.
