I was laid off officially. I was not given notice to come back to the office.

If you do not have an employment contract--and most of us do not have employment contracts--you are an employee at will. As an employee at will, you may be terminated at any time, for any reason--including unfair reasons--without warning or notice. Therefore, if you do not have an employment contract, you most likely do not have any recourse, not unless you can show that your termination was due to illegal discrimination (e.g. discrimination against you because of your race, sex, religion, age over 40, or disability).
