What is my liability if I hire a licensed and liability insured contractor who uses independent contractors for labor?
I am getting quotes for tree work and several of the companies that are licensed
and have liability coverage use independent contractors for labor. Could I be
held liable if one of the independent contractors is injured while performing
their duties.

You will be liable if an individual is injured on your property. An independent contractor is not eligible for worker's compensation.
Your liability will include medical bills, pain and suffering which is an amount in addition to the medical bills and wage loss.
If an injury occurs on your property, refer the matter to your homeowners insurance.
