The employer has to file a H-1B visa petition on your behalf with the USCIS. If it is approved, your status will be changed from F-2 to H-1B. The earliest t his can happen will be on October 1, 2012, as that is when the new annual quota will become available. However, a petition can be filed now (as of April 1, 2012) since a petition can be filed 6 months in advance.
