My boyfriend recently was caught with less than one gram of marijuana. He is 21 and this is his first offense ever.

In most states, possession of marijuana is a misdemeanor offense. Your boyfriend's first court appearance will be his arraignment in which he will be able to plead guilty or not guilty. If he pleads not guilty, then he can have a trial in the matter. If he pleads guilty, for first time offenders, you are given probation and or a deferred adjudication which will allow you to avoid jail and possibly a criminal record upon a successful completion of all of the Judges orders and probation conditions.
