When calculating child support is it a common practice that the alimony payments should be included which would reduce the child support?
If the ex’s income is only $6,000 and yet I pay her $10,000 in alimony why wouldn’t that be added to her income as it lowers mine substantially. And then child support figured out from there?

Alimony payments are separate and apart from child support payments. Alimony is usually in situations wherein the wife did not work or had very limited income or was accustomed to a particular lifestyle during the marriage and needs to sustain that income level. The alimony amount is based on evidence given, testimony taken and what the judge decides based on all the information at his or her disposal. Child support should not be reduced based on alimony payments but rather on the change in income of the supporting spouse or change in situation of the child or children.
