If my passport expires, can I still get a work permit?
I am a J-2 holder and I have valid work authorization. I will need to renew it for next year. I will get a DS form for 07/01/18-06/30/19, however my passport expires before then.

YOu should be able to renew/extend your passport through your home country's embassy/consulate in the US. THat is typically not a problem. have you contacted them about this ? if not, that should be your first step so that you understand the process and the timeline for getting a new passport or an extension thereof.
